As you might know by now, Physics is my favorite subject. So, when I was asked which courses I would like to support as a peer tutor, it was a no-brainer; It had to be Physics.
As a peer tutor, my responsibilities consisted of attending lectures, assisting students during problem solving time by answering questions, guiding, and employing various learning techniques. Outside of class, I also held weekly office hours at the UC Mass Center.
I chose this opportunity for two reasons. One, I wanted a part time job. Two, I wanted to get a feel for teaching and working with faculty. The first few weeks were timid, I was anxious to approach students and start conversations, but as the semester went on, I noticed my communication skills, knowledge-gap identification skills, and overall professionalism improved a lot. I had students who were comfortable asking me questions in every class, and others that showed up continuously to my office hours. Overtime, every session felt more like a lovely break from my difficult classes, and an opportunity to think about these primary concepts from new angles.
From working with the faculty to keeping up with students weekly, I think this semester really gave me a good idea of the challenging task of being a teacher, and made me appreciate all teachers a bit more than I already did, professors do not bite after all, haha.
